Back to the Future
This is not an April Fool. The story reminds of the movie Back to the Future:
STL, a worldwide Christian book distributor, will switch off their (new) SAP based system and migrate back to their original Informix based system, see:
Because at 4pm today, SAP dies. Synergi and stldistribution.co.uk will also be switched off, making way for the long-awaited reinstallation of Informix
This could be customer loyalty at it's best or it simply demonstrates the fact that one size doesn't fit all. Informix is a database with a very low footprint and is known to be as swift as an arrow.
If I would work for SAP, I would rethink my Informix strategy. Considering the fact that IBM will be going to market Informix as their premium solution for the mid-market (see IIUG Insider), SAP would be well advised to join this strategy and offer their potential mid-market customers the best possible solution:
SAP on top of Informix.
Only Informix and it's MACH11 technology allows customers to build highly available and scalable database clusters based on low cost hardware. Combined with the Linux operating system this is the optimal platform for mid-market customers.
SAP, when will you start to listen to the requirements of the mid-market ?
Happy Easter !
