Informix displaces Oracle at China Telecom

A strategic win for IBM Informix at the China Telecom has been reported by Informix City:

Excerpt:

Earlier this year, an IBM team set out to change that by focusing on converting
China Telecom, the country's largest telephone provider, into a dual database
account. The team proposed that Informix Dynamic Server 11.5 would replace Oracle
for the company's Integrated Settlement System. They also planned to convince local
ISVs to port their applications to Informix. As more ISVs signed on, the team
relayed that momentum back to China Telecom.

The IBM team sold China Telecom on the advantages of deploying a dual database
strategy and the strengths of Informix. China Telecom liked Informix for its high
performance (multi-thread technology), availability and reliability.
The company anticipated that the database will lower both DBA costs and
resource consumption.

This deal once again shows that IBM has only a chance to compete with Oracle if the sales team chooses the right data server depending on the customer needs. If the requirements of the customer are high availability and reliability, there is only one IBM data server that perfectly meets them: Informix Dynamic Server.

I still hear from colleagues that IBM sales/presales often recommends the wrong data server, because they are not aware of the sophisticated high availability technology and the extremely low administration costs of IDS. The result is in most cases a lost deal to the competition. This win demonstrates the right strategy for IBM sales to compete with Oracle.

Well done, IBM China !
